Gloria D. Gray

Special Honors & Achievements 

  • Gray retired from the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services as an Associate Hospital Administrator.  She was appointed to the Los Angeles County Hospital and Health Care Delivery Commission.
  • Gray is the first African American woman to be elected to the West Basin Board of Directors in its 60-year history.  During her first year on the Board, Gray was presented with the “2007 Water Person of the Year” award by the Water Replenishment District of Southern California for her commitment to conservation and building reliable water supplies for our communities.
  • Gray was appointed by the Speaker Emeritus Karen Bass to the Delta Stewardship Council. Ms. Gray is the first female and person of color to serve on the council.
  • In March 2009, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, appointed Gray to  the Water Quality Community Task Force, as part of the county’s Clean Water, Clean Beaches initiative to address pollution in local rivers, lakes, bays, beaches and coastal waters.  
  • Gray is an elected member of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party County Central Committee and has served as a member of the executive board, representing the 62nd Assembly District.
  • From 1995 to 2003, Gray served two-elected terms and twice president on the Inglewood Unified School District Board of Education. 
  • Union Member of SEIU Local 721 for over 30 years

Gray has received numerous awards, including:

  • 2013 Los Angeles WAVE Newspaper's Most Influential Award
  • In March of 2013 she was inducted into the National Association of University Women’s Hall of Fame for exceptional leadership
  • Gray was honored in October 2012 by the Southern California Water Committee with the “Honorable Harriett Wieder” award for leadership in water
  • Friends of Ballona Wetlands for her leadership on current and future water supply issues
  • May 2012, Gray received the “Outstanding Women of 2012” award from the Gardena Chamber of Commerce
  • 2009 “Democrat of the Year,” 51st Assembly District 
  • Outstanding Leadership Award from the American Business Women Association
  • Living History Maker from Turning Point Magazine
  • Friends of the Sisters at the Well for her leadership in civic and public engagement
  • 2011 Recipient El Camino College “Women of Distinction” 
  • 2009 Power Pac Award from the Los Angeles African American Women Political Action Committee
  • 2007 “Women in Water” Award from the Water Replenishment District of Southern California
  • 2007 Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Achievement from Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa
  • 2002 Woman of the Year from California 25th Senatorial District
  • Black Woman of Achievement Award from the NAACP Legal Defense Fund
  • Outstanding Community Honoree award from The A-Man, Inc. STEM International 
  • “Women in Action Award” from the Los Angeles African American Women’s Public Policy Institute as a role model for young women
  • “Frontline Soldier” for Pathways to Your Future
  • 1st Annual Los Angeles County Health and Fitness Award from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors

Gray has served on several Boards throughout the greater Los Angeles area including:

 Her service has also earned commendations and recognitions from several organizations and elected officials.  Most recently in 2011, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Chairman, State Board of Equalization Jerome E. Horton, Senator Darrell Steinberg, Senator Roderick D. Wright, Assistant Speaker pro Tempore Isadore Hall, III, Assemblymember Steven Bradford, and Assemblymember Mike Davis.  In past years, she has commendations from Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Governor Gray Davis, Lt.
